Dissertations are often based upon independent research but can take other forms (such as consultancy or work placement based). The specific requirements and format varies from programme to programme.

If undertaking a dissertation, it may help to develop the necessary skills you need to help you succeed with your dissertation.

Knowing what’s expected

The dissertation period can be extremely busy, therefore it is important you develop the necessary level of scholarly practice throughout your studies. Think about the skills you may need to develop to help your with your dissertation. Have you thought about the literature you may need to research? Or how you are going to manage your workload?

Clarify with your dissertation supervisor the standards expected of you and how your dissertation should be presented (including referencing conventions). This will help you to ensure your research, critical thinking and academic writing skills are at the right level.
